The End of an Era

October 31st, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in 2009, Ambassadors International, Delta Queen, Majestic America, cease operations
I've written before about the struggle to keep the Delta Queen operating. Not only does it appear that Congress won't extend her exemption to regulations against wooden ships, but that the entire line which operated her and other steamships, Majestic America, will be shutting down. This will affect all 8 of their ships, including one already taken over by the US Maritime Administration for non-payment of debt. 5 of the ships will be pulled out of the water and placed in long term storage.

Majestic America is owned by Ambassadors International, which also owns Windstar Cruises luxury line.

The steam vessels have a long history along America's waterways, from the Pacific Northwest to the South along rivers such as the Columbia, Mississippi and Missouri. They were reminders of our history before Interstate Highways, when rivers, lakes and trains handled most of the transportation needs of our country. The disappearance of these magnificent ships, which allowed us a glimpse at live when things were slower and quieter, is a sad note in maritime history.

It is hoped that eventually a buyer for these vessels will be found. However, the economics of them hasn't been strong for many years, and I'm not optimistic here.

All those who loved these vessels, and their history, please hold your memories in your heart, as their time is likely past.

NCL Outlines End to Fuel Supplement

October 30th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in NCL, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Refund, fuel surcharge
Surprising only in how long they took to announce this, NCL today outlined their process for eliminating fuel supplements on future bookings.

The thumbnail is this. For 2010 sailings booked on or after November 10, 2008, there will be no supplement.

For those booked prior to November 10, 2008, for sailings departing in 2009, the fuel supplement will be refunded via an onboard credit based on a specific formula. They've decided to use a formula similar to RCI's announced plan of basing fuel supplement on already-booked sailings on the price of West Texas Intermediate Crude on a particular date prior to each quarter. Thank you, NCL, for making this a bit easier! The table is below.

But basically what this means is this: If you're sailing for example in February, 2009, whether or not your fuel supplement will be refunded will be decided on December 18, 2008, when the price of West Texas Intermediate Crude will be evaluated. If the closing price below $65, you'll have a refund. Sailing in second quarter 2009? Then your date to watch is March 18, 2009 (by the way, these are the same dates RCI used for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara). And so on and so forth.

Any questions on your particular sailing? That's what I'm here for - just give me a call.

If you're the type who likes to read the full formula, here it is:

The current fuel supplement will no longer apply to bookings made on or after November 10, 2008 for sailings that depart on or after January 1, 2010.

For guests booked prior to November 10, 2008 for sailings that depart on or after January 1, 2010, the company has established the following guidelines for the refund of fuel supplements paid:
The criteria for refund will be determined on a quarterly basis. Should the closing price on the NYMEX (New York Mercantile Exchange) of West Texas Intermediate fuel be below $65 per barrel two weeks prior to the beginning of the calendar quarter (dates specified below), the company will refund fuel supplements paid in the form of an on-board credit.

For guests booked on sailings that depart in 2009 (on or after January 1, 2009 and that depart on or before December 31, 2009), regardless of booking date, the company has established the following guidelines for the refund of fuel supplements paid:

The criteria for refund will be determined on a quarterly basis. Should the closing price on the NYMEX (New York Mercantile Exchange) of West Texas Intermediate fuel be below $65 per barrel two weeks prior to the beginning of the calendar quarter (dates specified below), the company will refund fuel supplements paid in the form of an on-board credit.

The dates on which the price of West Texas Intermediate fuel will be measured and the quarters during which refunds could apply are:

Fuel Price Determination Date Quarter of Possible Fuel Supplement Refunds
December 18, 2008 First Quarter 2009
March 18, 2009 Second Quarter 2009
June 17, 2009 Third Quarter 2009
September 17, 2009 Fourth Quarter 2009
December 18, 2009 First Quarter 2010
March 18, 2010 Second Quarter 2010
June 17, 2010 Third Quarter 2010
September 17, 2010 Fourth Quarter 2010
December 17, 2010 First Quarter 2011

Determination of what quarter a sailing is in will be based solely on the sailing date. The entire cruise will be considered to be part of the quarter that the sailing date originates in.

Election Happy Hours from Royal Caribbean and Celebrity!

If you're as tired of all the political commercials and posturing, an Election Happy Hour from Celebrity and Royal Caribbean sounds like just the ticket!

(But as an aside, next election, I want smart chips in our TVs so that, if we've voted early, we no longer have to be subject to all the political advertising!)

Want a break from the election on Tuesday? Then Royal Caribbean is bringing a bumper crop of Happy Hour specials to you! An extremely long list of sailings, mostly in November and early December, where you can save enough to make the memories of all the negative adds fade a bit into the background. For my solo occupancy clients, they're even being unusually generous in reducing the single supplement for this event. Check out all the savings at Royal Caribbean November 4 Happy Hour Specials

For Celebrity, they've decided to run a 3-day post-election sale from Wednesday, November 5 through Friday, November 7. Building on the popularity of the past weeks' second passenger at half price specials, they're putting almost all the January and February sailings to Australia/New Zealand, South America, Panama Canal and Caribbean on sale!

Perfect timing to get away post-holiday and when the winter doldrums set in. Are you wanting a winter vacation on Celebrity? This sale is for you!

During this sale, on the applicable sailings, you'll receive 50% off the base fare of the second passenger in your stateroom! Excluded sailings are Celebrity Solstice; Celebrity Xpedition; Celebrity Mercury sailing 2/28/09; and Celebrity Century sailing 1/8/09 and 1/22/09.

If you're interested in any of these specials, as always just call or email me to get your custom quote. Toll free is 888-SAIL-123 (888-724-5123) and email is amber@cruiseresource.com.

In the meantime, hope you have a good weekend filled with something OTHER than last-minute electioneering. While I've spent a good portion of my life as a political consultant, like you, I'm ready for this election to be over and to go CRUISING again!

Oh yes, speaking of which, we do still have a bit of room on the 2-night Celebrity Solstice Preview Charter on November 21. Want to join me onboard?

Royal Caribbean Expands 2009/2010 Mexican Riviera Season

In yet another sign that consumers are not as interested in paying high prices for international air travel, Royal Caribbean has announced new cruise itineraries to the Mexican Riviera and Vancouver for the 2009-10 winter and spring seasons. Radiance of the Seas will increase their total number of number of San Diego sailings from September 2009 through May 2010 by adding 10 long cruises to the Mexican Riviera. These 9- to 11-night roundtrip itineraries are in addition to the 12 short four- and five-night cruises announced earlier this year. Guests can also choose an additional 12-night holiday cruise departing Dec. 21, 2009, or a thirteenth five-night short cruise, sailing on May 3, 2010.

Guests can also choose one of two West Coast cruises, one sailing from San Diego to Vancouver on Jan. 22, 2010 for 10 nights, and in reverse on March 2, 2010 for nine nights. Each sailing includes ports of call at Catalina Island and an overnight in San Francisco, Astoria (Oregon), Seattle and Victoria, British Columbia.

The previously-announced 2009/2010 South American season on the Radiance of the Seas is being cancelled to make way for these new Mexican Riviera and West Coast sailings. It's a shame, as South America was really coming into its own as a winter cruise destination for those looking for something a bit more exotic, but $1,400 airfares make it far less attractive a destination when consumers are worried about their economic future. Fortunately, however, several other lines, including sister brand Celebrity, continue to offer excellent itineraries in the region.

This is, however, exciting news for those who enjoy sailing from West Coast ports, as this means in addition to the Mariner of the Seas sailing 7-night itineraries from Los Angeles, Royal Caribbean will have another of their more popular classes of ship, the Radiance Class, available for unique itineraries.

Honoring Our Military

October 28th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Carnival, November 1, Royal Caribbean, Veteran's Day, military discounts
In honor of Veteran's Day, both Royal Caribbean and Carnival today announced some nice additions to their military rate programs for the month of November, applicable for both active-duty military and honorably-discharged former military personnel as well.

First up, Royal Caribbean is extending their Military Rate Program through the month of November with the following offers:
  • 3-5 Night Cruises - $50/cabin discount
  • 6-9 Night Cruises - $100/cabin discount
  • 10+ Night Cruises - $200/cabin discount

This offer is not only applicable for the military personnel's own cabin, but can be extended to two others as well for family or friends!

Carnival's offer is very similar, though they don't do a specific amount off per cabin. The discount is determined by ship and sale date. But it is also good through November and may be applied up to three cabins per eligible military person!

I will say that these discounts are stringently enforced, with proof in the form of a current military ID or DD-214 being required in order to book. But it's a nice way for the cruise lines to give back to those who give so much to us. I'm honored to extend these offers to you and to support our military!

Carnival Makes Fleet Changes with Liberty and Pride

October 28th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Baltimore, Carnival, Carnival Pride, Europe, Itinerary Changes, carnival Liberty, fleet changes
Carnival has announced a couple changes to their fleet schedules affecting the Carnival Liberty and Carnival Pride.

In anticipation of a bit lower demand for European cruises in the summer of 2009, mostly due to air issues, Carnival has decided to bring the Carnival Liberty back to the Caribbean year-round! They will still have the brand new Carnival Dream in Europe for a few sailings after her inaugural, but since most of Carnival's passengers in Europe are from North America, and we all are aware of what's happening with air fares and lowered availability, they believe that even with the exchange rate improving (rather dramatically this last week, actually), fewer North Americans looking for mainstream cruises will be heading to Europe next summer.

The Liberty will continue her previously-scheduled itinerary of sailings through the spring, then in April, 2009, she will begin a new series of 7-night sailings from Miami.

This change means that the Carnival Pride will be able to move up to Baltimore to start her year-round cruises even earlier than originally announced! She will now begin her Baltimore deployment on April 27, 2009!

Reservations for both ships for the new sailings will begin on October 30.

The Galapagos Wrap-Up

You’ve been waiting for this. And finally… the last installment of my “Not Quite Live from the Celebrity Xpedition” blog. It’s been such a busy time this past week or so, I didn’t want this to get lost in the rush of other news and sales.

Some closing thoughts. The crew was terrific overall. I can’t say enough about the naturalists, especially. They really know their stuff, and care. Each has their different strengths. Some have a slower pace, some make sure you see more – you get to know which are your personal favorites throughout the week. Do go with a variety – you’ll learn something different and get a different perspective from each one.

Pack next to nothing. There’s an inexpensive laundry onboard. Make use of it. You really only need shorts and shirts for the day, very casual in the evening – everyone repeats and no one cares. I did find that changing my shirt from morning to afternoon made it more comfortable, so take enough for a 2-3 days, and just send out the laundry 2-3 times. A couple light slacks or skirts and tops for the evening is plenty.

Make sure your camera gear is all set. If you shoot a DSLR, consider renting a longer lens if you don’t have one in your kit. (I really like the folks at http://www.lensrentals.com/.) Have lots of batteries and memory cards. While you can download to a disc onboard, you don’t want to risk the burn being bad or similar – keeping the images on your cards until you return home is the safer way to do it. People with compacts can get some very nice pictures on this trip – don’t feel the need to buy a whole new setup if you won’t use it otherwise. It is more important to know your camera than to have something “good” you don’t have the faintest clue how to use.

Food ranges from good to excellent. Since it is all locally sourced, sometimes it has a different flavor than you’re used to. If you’re a fish eater, I highly recommend the fish entrees, especially at dinner. Any chance you get to eat Ecuadoran food, take it – it’s wonderful! I long for the various types of Ecuadoran breads I ate during my stay. Dinner can sometimes be a bit slow after the evening lecture, but it’s a wonderful socializing time. Remember, the wine is included.

The crew is all local. While they may not be as polished as you’ll find on one of the other Celebrity ships, they’re every bit as warm and friendly. Because they’re local, their knowledge and expertise are a wonderful compliment. Celebrity touches are everywhere, and the crew really cares that you have a remarkable time.

Your fellow passengers will add a lot to this experience. This is the type of trip where you become true friends. The nature of this trip lends itself to some pretty deep bonding over the shared experiences you have. Because of this, it’s perfectly appropriate for solo cruisers, though there are almost never reduced supplements, unfortunately. Friends, families and couples all mingle well onboard. There are typically a lot of families onboard during holiday periods – Christmas, spring break and summer. Think of this as a moving, living science lab for your children. Very young children aren’t really appropriate, but older elementary and above do quite well, of course depending on the child. Just remember, there aren’t a lot of onboard diversions on the ship itself.

The friends I made on this trip were an essential part of how this affected me. There is so much to see, learn and experience, and the shared experiences and discussions lead to greater understanding. But the fun also was a huge part. When you’re having such significant experiences, laughter is essential. I met and began to know some very special people on this journey, and I want to thank them. I hope you’ll have a similar experience when you go. Seek out the interactions, find people with whom you can bond. This ship and experience make it easy, and you’ll be glad you did.

If you’re so inclined, and the weather permits, consider sleeping at least one night up on the top deck. Even for just part of the night. It’s spectacular – you won’t believe how many stars you see. It’s so peaceful, but you’ll hear the sea life attracted to the boat, the ocean, and you’ll have a chance to just absorb everything you’ve experienced. The lounges are comfy, but be sure to either bring up a blanket or dress warmly – it does get chilly.

I highly recommend taking the Celebrity package of at least 10 nights. While it is possible to get yourself to Baltra to catch the ship, it is nice to have the time in Quito, and to have the chartered flights with everything taken care of. It really makes a difference I think. I understand that they’ve changed the pre-cruise tour to allow for a couple options – in addition to the city tour I described earlier, they also now have a couple other choices. Bravo, Celebrity!

Do consider doing a pre-cruise trip to Machu Picchu as well. I recommend pre-cruise, as your body will likely handle the altitude better at the start of the trip rather than at the end. But post-cruise is also a good option. In other words – while you’re in the area, go to Machu Picchu! Either through Celebrity or a package arranged on your own – it’s fairly easily done. Celebrity, of course, does it all first class, including the Hiram Bingham Orient Express train.

I’ve been asked to compare Antarctica and Galapagos by many of my clients, especially since I traveled to both in a close period of time. Which do I prefer? I can’t say one over the other – I think both are essential experiences for an adventurer. But they’re very different. Antarctica hit me emotionally, while Galapagos, though emotional, was more an intellectual shock to the system. Antarctica is sweeping and beautiful and personal with the penguins. South America ranges from urban to rough and rugged. But it’s more visual and grand. Galapagos is intensely personal, challenging your preconceptions, and touching your soul in a raw way. I’ve used raw frequently, possibly overusing it, but it’s the word which best describes these islands. They’re not pure, as you’ll learn, but they’re not tamed, either. What you see is the power of nature at work. In a way you can’t experience anywhere else in the world. You realize you don’t know as much as you think you do until you immerse yourself into it in person.

Which would I recommend doing first? Both are threatened, by different processes. Antarctic access is likely to become more limited in the years ahead if the Antarctic Treaty Organization has its way. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a dramatically reduced number of visitors mandated in the next few years. And of course, there are the constantly changing climatic issues at work here, too.

Galapagos access is tightly controlled by the Ecuadoran government, and there are signs that, while tourism is an important aspect to these islands, the government may more tightly control that as well. Celebrity has an excellent relationship with the government, but of course people in power come and go, and that can change. I think Celebrity is one of the operators most likely to have an ongoing permit to operate in these waters, as they’ve carefully cultivated their relationship, but as the government looks at restricting access further, this will serve to make the Galapagos far more expensive and difficult to do.

What does this all mean? I recommend putting both these locations high on your “must do soon” list, rather than your “someday I want to go” list. They’re worth making the effort and sacrifices to do sooner, rather than later. Which one you do first is up to you – timing and circumstances will dictate that to a certain extent, especially since Antarctica is only a seasonal option.

As many of you know, I travel broadly. I do my best to keep exploring new territory. I rarely repeat. I always have new priorities moving to the top of my list as I mark off one destination. However, both these locations I’m repeating – Antarctica in January, 2009, and Galapagos in 2010. It takes something very special to make me want to go back that quickly. Galapagos is THAT amazing. Every time you go it will be different. I want to see it again, learn more from it. And I want to do it on Celebrity.

Has this whet your appetite for the Galapagos? Want to go with me? I’m returning in April, 2010 to be exact. In time for the Waved Albatross migration, still with warm waters and dry weather. Come with me? If you’re interested, the flyer can be found at: Celebrity Xpedition April 2010. Give me a call or email me with questions or to book into this group! Because this is more of a once-in-a-lifetime trip for most, I’ve booked it a bit farther out than usual to give you time to save and plan. I also wanted to be sure to go at the optimum time.

Join me! See that what I’ve talked about and posted is just the tip of the iceberg. Live for yourself the moving experiences I’ve described, and come to your own understandings and realizations about raw, unfiltered nature.

If you’ve missed any part of this blog series, the full series, with larger pictures, has been compiled and can be found at Not Quite Live from Celebrity Xpedition

Royal Caribbean Expands “My Time Dining” Again

Royal Caribbean has added 2 new ships to it's "My Time Dining" program, allowing for flexible-time dining in the main dining room. Starting on October 30, the Legend of the Seas will allow for this option, with the Enchantment of the Seas following suit with her November 10 sailing.

Royal Caribbean is still saying this is a limited-time option, and only shows dates into late, 2010, but I expect it to become a permanent feature of their fleet. Like the other ships, in order to participate, you must fully pre-pay your gratuities prior to the cruise, and you may dine between 6P and 9:30P.

The other ships offering this dining option are the Jewel of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas. The Oasis of the Seas will also have this option when she debuts in December, 2009.

Find Me in Budget Travel Magazine!

If you've read my bio, you know that I have been quoted and recommended in various news and travel publications, such as Fodors, MSNBC, Tripso, Smarter Travel, Frommers.com and others. Many of you have found me through these or other travel sites and publications.

I'm honored to annouce that I am featured in an article in the November issue of Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel Magazine (on stands now). This magazine has long been the favorite of travelers who look for advice in getting the best value out of their vacation spending, and one I've enjoyed as well.

In an article entitled "Going it Alone," I was interviewed on how solo cruisers can avoid or reduce the single supplements in cruising. My site, www.singlescruiseresource.com, was also featured.

Thank you to all of you who have made this possible. Your loyalty in using and recommending me for solo occupancy cruises, not to mention for group, family and couples cruises, has given me this exposure which will further help my efforts to be able to bring you the news, information and fares you want. Especially for solo cruisers, this kind of publicity assists me in working and negotiating with cruise lines to bring you more reduced single supplements.

Oh, and if you're looking for reduced supplements? Take a look at the Royal Caribbean options over on SinglesCruiseResource.com. There are more than 175 offers with supplements as low as 125% from Royal Caribbean alone! Celebrity, Azamara and NCL also have updated offers (NCL's are at NO single supplement!).
