Efforts under way to keep Delta Queen

September 29th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Cruise News, Cruising USA, River Cruise News, Steamboats, US River Cruisisng

Delta3 VICKSBURG, Miss. -- Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker have joined in congressional efforts to keep the Delta Queen afloat.

The Mississippi Republicans have joined with lawmakers from seven other states to exempt the riverboat from safety regulations.

Because its superstructure is wood, the Delta Queen violates the 1966 Safety of Life at Seas Act. The owners have operated the passenger steamer under an exemption, which expires this year.

Proposed legislation would extend the exemption to November 1, 2018. Without the bill, the Delta Queen could not be allowed to board more than 50 passengers or operate overnight cruises.

The boat's November farewell tour, which Majestic is calling the 2008 Delta Queen Tribute Event, will see the riverboat stop at Greenville, Vicksburg and Natchez en route to New Orleans and retirement.

Star Clippers Tight-lipped on Newbuild

August 18th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Cruise News, Newbuilds, Sailing Ships

After announcing plans last September to build the largest and most expensive sailing vessel ever, Star Clippers is still in discussions with various shipyards and “working on purchasing agreements” for its fourth yet-to-be-named ship, said Mark Carlson, director of marketing, on Thursday. “I haven’t heard much on anything at all as of late; it’s all very hush hush,” Carlson said. However, he did reveal that the five-masted vessel will be 7,400 tons, 518 feet in length, have a beam of 61 feet, and a 20-foot draft. The ship will also have an “Ice-Class C” hull, extra- heavy anchor gear, a davit-dampening system, and specially modified tenders – allowing her to sail virtually anywhere in the world. Currently, Star Clippers operates three sailing ships in the Caribbean, Far East, Mediterranean and Tahiti.

10 new cruises for Hebridean Princess in 2009

August 2nd, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in 2009 Itineraries, Cruise News, New Itineraries, Small ships under 150 Passengers

The popular small luxury British cruise ship Hebridean Princess, which celebrates 20 years of continued service with Hebridean International Cruises next year will be offering 10 new cruises in 2009.

Founded by a Yorkshire family of keen motor-sailors who often toured the remote Scottish western isles, they saw an opportunity to provide ‘yacht-style’ cruises around the wildly beautiful and inaccessible area. The family acquired the small Scottish ferry Columba, which was then totally refitted and refurbished as Hebridean Princess, making her inaugural voyage on 26 May 1989.

To this day, no other cruise ship follows Hebridean Princess’ itineraries, which over the years have been developed by the Captains, crew and guides. In 2009 the vessel will visit 33 Scottish islands, each with its own geographical and historical character, and will sail amongst many more of the hundreds dotting the west coast waters of Scotland. Hebridean Princess will also be visiting Norway, as well as coming south on her traditional final cruise of the year; the ‘Jewels of English heritage’ cruise along the south coast of England.

The 10 new cruises for Hebridean Princess in 2009 include:

West Coast Explorer – two seven night round-trip cruises from Oban calling at Shieldaig, Gairloch, Plockton, Inverie, Fort William, Skye, Rum and Lismore

  • South to the Small Isles – two seven night round-trip cruises from Oban calling at Eigg, Muck, Ulva, Iona, Jura, Colonsay, Harris, Pabbay, Mingulay or Berneray
  • Spring in the Sea of the Hebrides – an eight night round-trip cruise from Oban calling at Inverie, Glenmore Bay, Jura, Colonsay, Iona, Tiree, Muck, Eigg or Canna, Skye, Rum, Coll, Barra and Eriskay

Delta Queen attracting bidders on sale block

August 2nd, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Cruise History, Cruise News, Paddlewheelers, Steamboats

Deltaqueen246 The California-based company that owns the Delta Queen confirmed Wednesday that multiple bidders are pursuing a purchase of the historic riverboat with the goal of keeping the 174-passenger vessel in the overnight cruise business beyond this year.

“We lost the battle in Congress by just a few votes. So, we don’t have the right to operate her beyond Oct. 30. However, there are people who believe that under their ownership, they could get the exemption for another 10 years and operate,” said Joseph Ueberoth, CEO of Ambassadors International Inc., in a conference call on the company’s second-quarter earnings results.

The Delta Queen’s future is in jeopardy because of a refusal by Congress to renew a decades-old exemption to federal fire safety rules banning the use of wooden boats for overnight cruises.

Newport Beach, Calif.-based Ambassadors (NASDAQ: AMIE) put the Delta Queen and six other boats up for sale in April, hoping to generate cash that could be used to pay off debt, buy back shares and invest in other business lines. The need for cash grew stronger Wednesday, as Ambassadors announced a net loss of $2.4 million, or 22 cents per share, on revenue of $80.6 million for the three months ended June 30. Both its revenue and profit figures were lower than two analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial had projected.

Ueberoth provided an update on the sale process but declined to identify any potential buyers.

“The parties are finishing their vessel inspections and due diligence,” he said. “We still cannot confirm the scope of the sale, the numbers of transactions we anticipate or if we will be successful in this process. It is our desire to bring this process to a close in the third quarter.”

Ambassadors Declares Loss

August 2nd, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Cruise News, Paddlewheelers, River Cruise News, Steamboats

Delta_queen Ambassadors International, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMIE) has reported a net loss of $2.4 million on revenues of $80.6 million for the three months ended June 30, 2008, compared to net income of $5.8 million on revenues of $80.3 million for the three months ended June 30, 2007.

Marine revenues in the second quarter of 2008 increased $2.7 million over the second quarter of 2007 as a result of an increase in sales in Bellingham Marine, the Company's marina construction business. Travel, incentive and event related revenue in the second quarter of 2008 increased $0.1 million over the same period in 2007 primarily due to an increase in program volume. Cruise revenues decreased $2.4 million in the second quarter of 2008 over the same period in 2007 due to $1.6 million decline in revenue from Windstar Cruises which was acquired in April 2007 and $0.8 million decline in revenue from Majestic America Line. Additionally, a decrease of $0.2 million in insurance premiums earned on existing insurance programs as a result of not entering into any new programs in 2008 also offset the increase in revenue for the three months ended June 30, 2008.

Costs and operating expenses were $81.5 million in the second quarter of 2008, a decrease of $0.1 million from the second quarter of 2007. Costs and operating expenses in the second quarter of 2008 included a $5.9 million decrease in Majestic America Line operating costs. This decrease was offset by a $2.4 million increase in operating costs for Windstar Cruises and a $3.4 million increase in costs in the marine division, primarily due to the increase in cost of marine revenue resulting from increased revenues generated during the period.
